SANTIAGO, Jan 28, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - A boat full of tourists capsized on a river in southern Chile over the weekend, killing at least six of the 34 people on board, authorities said Monday.

The vessel with 32 passengers and two crew had set out from the southern city of Osorno Sunday, and sank in the Rio Negro just short of its final destination -- the Pacific port of Bahia Mansa.

The Chilean navy told AFP Monday there were six people confirmed dead and one missing. Their nationalities were not divulged.

The captain of the boat has been arrested. Prosecutors say the boat was overladen and several passengers were not wearing a life jacket.
