ACC sues ex-minister Nuruzzaman, wife, son over graft charges

DHAKA, Feb 3, 2025 (BSS) - The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed three separate cases against former Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed, his wife Hosne Ara Begum and their son M Rakibuzzaman Ahmed for allegedly acquiring wealth inconsistent with their known sources of income.

ACC Director General (Prevention) Md Akhtar Hossain told journalists today in a briefing.

In the first case, Nuruzzaman Ahmed has been accused of power-abuse by holding a very responsible position and amassed illegal wealth worth about Taka 5 crore31 lakh 98 thousand and 172, which was beyond his income sources.

The anti-graft watchdog revealed that he made a suspicious and unusual transaction in 31 bank accounts involving Taka 62 crore, 8 lakh, 45 thousand and 681. 

In the second case, Nuruzzaman Ahmed’s wife Hosne Ara Begum and Nuruzzaman Ahmed have been accused of illegally inconsistent with the source of known income. 

Besides, she has been accused of transferring and withdrawing illegal source of money or property obtained by suspicious and unusual transactions in 25 bank accounts involving Tk 50 crore, 43 lakh, 15 and 860, which income sources are not mentioned in the wealth statement submitted to the ACC earlier. 

Apart from this, another case was filed with Dhaka office against former minister’s son Md Rakibuzzaman Ahmed accusing him of abusing his father Nuruzzaman Ahmed with influence and financial support, and obtained illegal movable and immovable assets worth about Tk 2 crore, 6 lakh, 67 thousand and 450.

Besides, Rakibuzzaman, in a suspicious state, transitioned Tk 22 crore, 43 lakh and 2,925 with his 20 bank accounts, the ACC mentioned.

The investigation found that he was involved in hiding the illegal money and source of money or property received by suspicious and unusual transactions.
