DHAKA, March 14, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has condoled the death of the Rohingya man in Cox's Bazar

"This afternoon, ahead of a historic Iftar joined by Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, the visiting Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and tens of thousands of Rohingya people, we are very sad to report the death of a member of the community when he came to join the congregation," said a statement issued by the Chief Adviser's Press Wing.

Despite the extraordinary efforts of the authorities to keep everyone safe during this momentous occasion, this accident occurred and deeply saddened all who were present, it said.

"Our hearts are out with the families of the deceased."

Chief Adviser Prof Yunus has ordered an immediate investigation into his death.

Camp officials said five people, including 43-year-old Neyamot Ullah, were injured during the event and were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Ullah was declared dead at one of the hospitals. A postmortem is expected to determine the cause of the death.

Of the four injured Rohingya men, two have since returned home after receiving first aid. The conditions of the other two were stable. Doctors said they were out of danger.

The Chief Adviser also thanked the Rohingya community for joining the Ramadan Solidarity Iftar event.

It is estimated that 100,000 Rohingyas joined the Iftar and broke their fast with visiting UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the Chief Adviser, according to the statement.

The elderly Rohingya man was reportedly killed and two others injured in a stampede during an iftar gathering attended by the Chief Adviser and UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Cox’s Bazar this evening.
