Govt plans to restore lost species of plant: Rizwana

DHAKA, March 18, 2025 (BSS) - Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today said that the government had a plan to restore lost species of plant and five endangered animal species.

The plan aims to complete this initiative before the upcoming International Day for Biological Diversity.

Rizwana shared this information during a meeting at the Bangladesh National Herbarium, adjacent to the Mirpur National Botanical Garden, here this afternoon.

The environment adviser highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to conserve biodiversity.

She said a biodiversity register would be created under the Biodiversity Act.

Research on endangered and lost plant species will be expanded, and a booklet will be published to provide relevant information to stakeholders, she added.

Rizwana said the National Herbarium is not just a conservation centre but a crucial hub for research and education.

She directed the officials concerned to enhance collaboration with the Forest Department to improve research quality.

Earlier, the adviser visited the plant museum of the National Herbarium and later toured the National Botanical Garden.

During the visit, Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed, Joint Secretary (Forest) Shamima Begum, Chief Conservator of Forests Md Amir Hosain Chowdhury, Director of the National Herbarium Md Rezaul Karim, and Director of the National Botanical Garden Shawkat Imran Arafat were present, among others.
