DHAKA, April 30, 2025 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today scrapped a High Court verdict that had upheld a 13-year prison sentence for BNP leader Amanullah Aman and a three-year sentence for his wife Sabera Aman in a graft case.

The three-member apex court bench, led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, pronounced the judgment, stating, "Appeal is allowed. The judgment and order passed by the High Court Division is set aside."

Senior Advocate AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Barrister Sakib Mahmud moved the case for Aman and his wife, while senior Advocate Asif Hasan argued for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The defence said that because of today's judgment, there is now no legal bar for Aman to contest in the next general election.

The ACC on March 6, 2007, filed the case against the couple with Kafrul Thana in the capital for amassing illegal wealth and concealing information in the wealth statement.

Dhaka Special Judge's Court on June 21, 2007, convicted and sentenced Aman to 13 years and his wife to three years' imprisonment. The BNP leader appealed against the lower court conviction, with the High Court and it acquitted them of the charges on August 16, 2010.

But following an order of the Supreme Court, the High Court held the hearing of the case afresh and on May 30, 2023, upheld the judgment initially pronounced by the lower court concerned.
