Prof Nurul Islam was legendary physician: Farida

CHATTOGRAM, April 30, 2025 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today said National Professor Dr Nurul Islam was a legendary physician of the country, who earned immense fame for his contributions to medical science and academia.

"The contribution of Professor Nurul Islam to society and the nation is immeasurable," she said while addressing a seminar titled "The Unparalleled Legacy of National Professor Dr Nurul Islam: Pioneering Contributions in Education, Research, Community Development and Humanitarian Services" at the University of Science and Technology Chattogram (USTC).

USTC organized the seminar marking the 97th birth anniversary of its founder, National Professor Dr Nurul Islam, on its campus.

Farida said Prof Nurul Islam remains a pioneer in the country's medical science, who laid the foundation for modern medical education and research. He was conferred the title of National Professor in 1987.

She described Prof Nurul Islam as a generous humanitarian and dedicated visionary who founded the country's first private university-USTC-with the aim of promoting higher education in medical science.

Prof Nurul Islam was also involved in various social organizations and established several institutions including the Islamic Chikitsha Mission, Jonoseba Foundation, Modern National Tuberculosis Association, and USTC to advance public health, the adviser added.

Chaired by USTC Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Solaiman, the seminar was also addressed by Editor of Dainik Azadi M A Malek, USTC Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof M A Mohi Uddin Chowdhury, and Acting Director of the Institute of Applied Health Sciences Prof Dr Ruma Barua as special guests.

Speakers at the seminar highlighted Prof Nurul Islam's outstanding contributions to the development of medical science and research in the country, and fondly recalled his remarkable life and achievements.

Prof Dr Badiul Alam of the Applied Health Science department presented the keynote speech, while USTC Acting Registrar Dilip Kumar Barua, deans of various faculties, and heads of departments were also present.
