DHAKA, May 7, 2025 (BSS) – Dhaka University administration today launched its first-ever tree census to decorate the campus with local and native variety of trees.

The census titled- “Not foreign, Let us adorn DU with native TREES” is conducted by the university’s Arboriculture Center with support from the Dhaka University Environment Society and Green Future Foundation.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Niaz Ahmed Khan inaugurated the census at the Mall Chattar with Arboriculture Center’s Director Professor Dr. Mohammad Jasim Uddin as the president.

The Vice-Chancellor Khan said, “The tree-census will help the university to learn about the diversity of tree species on campus”.

Noting the project will raise awareness about the importance of native species and contribute to sustainable planning of campus spaces, he said, “It will support both the conservation of biodiversity and environmental-friendly development activities.”

A 10-member team, consisting of researchers and students from the Department of Botany and supervised by Prof. Uddin, has been formed to conduct the census.

The team will document the number and density of fruit, flower, and forest trees, assess tree health, distinguish between native and non-native species, and identify ancient, endangered, and potentially hazardous trees.
