Govt to supply additional 250 mmcfd to industries

DHAKA, May 7, 2025 (BSS) – The government has decided to supply additional 250 million cubic feet natural gas per day (mmcfd) to support industries facing reduced output due to a significant gas supply shortfall.

The decision was taken at a special meeting in the Energy and Mineral Resources Division with Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan in the chair.

According to the meeting, 150 mmcfd gas will be curtailed from the power sector while 100 mmcfd will be added from the import of four additional LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) cargoes.

It said the four additional LNG cargoes will be imported at a cost of Tk. 2800 crore during the May-August period as an immediate step.

Currently, Petrobangla supplies a total of about 2790 mmcfd of gas through production from local fields and imported LNG against the demand of 3800 mmcfd.

Of this, about 1,862 mmcfd gas comes from local fields and the remaining 928 mmcfd comes from imported LNG, while 1010 mmcfd was deficit.
