Govt takes elaborate programmes marking birth anniversary of national poet

DHAKA, May 8, 2025 (BSS) - The government has taken elaborate programmes to celebrate the 126th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in a befitting manner with the theme 'The Mass Uprising of 2024: The Legacy of Kazi Nazrul'.

Marking the birth anniversary, the cultural affairs adviser and the secretary of the ministry will place floral wreaths on the grave of the poet in the capital on May 25.

The three-day focal programme marking the celebration will be held at Daulatpur in Cumilla, where Professor Salimullah Khan will deliver the keynote paper.

Besides, the day will be celebrated in Dhaka, Thrishal in Mymensingh, Teota in Manikganj, Karpashdanga in Chuadanga and other places across the country.

Marking the day, Nazrul Mela, discussions and cultural functions will be held at Chattogram.

These decisions have been taken at a meeting of the Najrul Janmabarshiki Udjapan Jatiya Committee, said a press release received here today.

Marking the day, photographs, poems, profiles and paintings of the national poet will be displayed on all road islands in Dhaka and other districts.

In other districts, the day will be celebrated with due dignity by forming committees with the help of local Nazrul researchers or cultural personalities.

Discussions will be organised in various departments under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

In addition, Bangladesh Shishu Academy will organise special programmes for children.

The day will also be celebrated in Bangladesh embassies abroad. Cultural programmes, discussions, writing and recitation competitions will be organised in all educational institutions of the country, including Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University.

The National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Institute will organise an exhibition of the poet's pictures, posters and books, and the Public Library Department will organise a book exhibition, reading competition and essay competition to familiarise the poet with the current generation.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy will publish 600 souvenirs and 20,000 posters marking the day.
