SYDNEY, May 9, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Australia's prime minister said Friday he will invite Pope Leo XIV to visit in 2028, hailing the pontiff's election as a "momentous day".

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the pope will be asked to come for the 2028 International Eucharistic Congress, to be hosted by Sydney.

The gathering of the Roman Catholic faithful is held every four years.

"Today is a momentous day for Catholics around the world and faithful in Australia," Albanese said in a message of congratulations.

As the first North American pope, his leadership came at "an important time", he said.

"May the papacy of Pope Leo advance the cause of peace and social justice for all humanity."
