DHAKA, May 12, 2025 (BSS) - Leaders and activists of the Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) today formally urged the Election Commission to cancel the party registrations of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance, accusing them of committing genocide.

A seven-member GOP delegation submitted a written petition to Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Shah at his Agargaon office this noon.

The delegation included GOP spokesperson Faruk Hasan, senior joint general secretary Hasan Al Mamun, higher council members Abu Hanif, Shakil Uzzaman, Mahfuzur Rahman Khan, Habibur Rahman Riju and Zubo Odhikar Parishad president Manjur Morshed Mamun.

According to the petition, the Advisory Council on May 10 decided to ban on all activities of the Awami League-including its digital operations-under the Anti-Terrorism Act, pending the trial of its leaders at the International Crimes Tribunal.

The petition cites the party's alleged role in the "July Genocide" and claims the interim government's decision to disband the party's activities was necessary to ensure national security and uphold sovereignty in light of ongoing student and public protests.

The GOP further demanded the immediate cancellation of the 14-party alliance's registration, including that of the Jatiya Party, accusing them of complicity in genocide and treason.

The petition argues that these parties supported the perpetrators of the alleged atrocities and played a collaborative role in enforcing a one-party fascist regime under the Awami League.

"We expect the election commission to take swift action to cancel the registrations of the Awami League, the Jatiya Party and their allied parties, to address public outrage and uphold justice," the petition added.
