DHAKA, May 12, 2025 (BSS) – Health Sector Reform Commission (HSRC) has recommended the government to amend and reformulate all the health-related old laws to ensure patients safety, monetary stability, accountability and emergency preparation.
HSRC Chief Professor AK Azad Khan along with other members of the commission handed over the report on health sector reformations to the Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus at his residence Jamuna on May 5.
In the recommendation, the commission suggested the interim government that the name for the new laws to be Bangladesh Health Commission Act, Bangladesh Health Service Act, Public Health Infrastructure Act, Bangladesh Food, Drug and Medical Device Act, Drug Pricing and Access Act, Healthcare Provider and Patient Safety Act, Hospital and Diagnostic Accreditation Act, Health Protection Act, Women's Health Act, Cancer Control Act, Child Development Center Act, Bangladesh Medical Research Council Act.
However, the commission also recommended some laws to be amended which include Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, Medical Education Accreditation Act, Nursing and Midwifery Council Act, Pharmacy Council Act, Allied Health Professionals Council Act.
“The proposed and existing laws can collectively play an effective role in building a combined framework for country’s public health sector development. These laws will have a positive impact not only on the health sector but also on the environment, food security and social justice,” the recommendation added.
“If these are implemented effectively, the health sector will be safer, more equitable and sustainable, and it will be possible to ensure the health rights of the people of Bangladesh,” it observed.
The preamble to the proposal further stated that despite Bangladesh's significant progress in the primary healthcare sector since independence, Bangladesh is far behind in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and universal health coverage.
