DHAKA, June 13, 2025 (BSS) – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the message of bringing national election timeline following the meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is a positive sign for the country’s democracy.

"We were waiting for the much-awaited good news for the nation from today’s meeting between Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Muhammad Yunus BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and in London. The two-hour meeting has become a turning point for the nation as the meeting decided to bring the timeline for the national parliamentary election in February 2026,” said Mirza Fakhrul.

The BNP secretary general made the remarks while talking to journalists at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan, following today’s meeting in London between Chief Adviser  Prof Mohammad Yunus and BNP acting chief Tarique Rahman.

“We noticed that immediately after the meeting, a joint declaration was made that the meeting between our two leaders was held in a very cordial and pleasant atmosphere. National election was one of the major issues of the meeting,” he said.

“Based on the proposal of Tarique Rahman, the chief adviser has consented to bring the national election to mid-February from April next year,” he added.

Fakhrul said that there was uncertainty all around and many people were talking a lot about it.

“Today, the two leaders have proven that the people of Bangladesh can still unite in times of need and leaders can provide leadership,” he added.

He said that following the meeting, Tarique Rahman called him and paid tribute to all who sacrificed their lives in the July-August movement for democracy over the past 15 years.

“At the same time, he expressed gratitude to his mother, Khaleda Zia, for guiding him correctly," Fakhrul said.

The BNP secretary general expressed gratitude to Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus and said, "With great prudence, he invited Tarique Rahman to this meeting, resolving the uncertainty and allowing the nation to move forward with hope."
