No political or communal motive behind Rabindra Kacharibari incident: cultural ministry

DHAKA, June 13, 2025 (BSS) – The Ministry of Cultural Affairs today said that there was no political and communal motive behind the Rabindra Kacharibari in Shahjadpur of Sirajganj clarifying that the incident stemmed from a personal conflict. 

The ministry in a statement said the Rabindra Kacharibari is a reserved antiquities asset of Bangladesh govt. Visitors from country and abroad every came to visit the place. On June 8, some workers of the site locked into a clash with a visitor there with ticket issues. 

The ministry in an official  statement said the Rabindra Kacharibari is a protected heritage of the Bangladesh government and every year, thousands of visitors from home and abroad come to visit the place associated with the memory of poet Rabindranath Tagore. On 8 June, a scuffle and fight broke out between the employee in charge of Shahjadpur Rabindra Kacharibari and a visitor due to a misunderstanding and argument over a parking ticket, it said. 

There was an allegation against the custodian of archaeology department Habibur Rahman of beating visitor named Shahnewaz. Following this, a group of local people staged human chain in favour of Shanewaz demanding punishment of custodian Habibur Rahman and other workers of the department, said the statement.  

The agitated people from the human chain marched toward Rabindra Kacharibari and entered the site forcefully and that time several employees working at Kacharibari were injured, the ministry said.

The ministry said following the incident, two probe bodies have been formed by the District Administration and Archaeology Department. The committees have been asked to submit the report within five days.

The Archaeology Department has also filed a police case in this regard and police arrested five people following the case.

The ministry also said that the site has been opened again for the public from today. No signs related to Rabindranath Tagore were destroyed and there were no political or communal connections except from the personal dispute behind this incident.
