DHAKA, June 25, 2025 (BSS) – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in partnership with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been implementing a project to ensure road safety in the capital city.

Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project (DRSP) is being implemented since March 2022 in joint efforts of the JICA and DMP.

The DRSP is a three-year technical cooperation project aimed at strengthening the capacity of DMP to implement comprehensive traffic safety measures in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area.

DRSP consists of three outputs, and one of the outputs focuses on road safety education/public relations through various methods.

About the DRSP, DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali said, “Awareness and vigilance are the most important things for road safety. Through Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project (DRSP), we are trying to make school and college students aware. If the students are aware, they will be able to make others aware.”

He stressed the need for raising awareness among people to ensure road safety, describing the road accidents as a big problem for Dhaka and elsewhere across the country.

The DMP chief said, “The main reason for road accidents is the lack of awareness of the general public, including drivers, about traffic laws and rules.”

As part of the move to ensure road safety, the DMP and JICA held a Road Safety Poster and Slogan Contest 2025 to increase awareness among school and university students following the Japanese tradition and to make them responsible road users and safety ambassadors.

A total of 180 students from 16 schools and five universities in the capital participated in this competition. Among the participants, 10 each were awarded with prizes and certificates for best slogans and posters.
