DHAKA, June 26, 2025 (BSS) – The three month long afforestation programme undertaken by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched today aimed at protecting the environment and building a green city.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan inaugurated the programme at Hararbari premises of Purbachal New Town Project this morning with DNCC administrator Mohammad Ezaz in the chair.

The theme of this year’s DNCC afforestation programme is “Healthy City, Covered with Green’.

Addressing the function, the adviser urged all to work sincerely for protecting the ecology of the city saying, “If the eco-system of the city once ruined, then it would be difficult to restore it”.

She said the government is committed to build a livable Dhaka through increasing greenery range. Putting emphasis on ensuring proper maintenance of planted saplings, she said, “We should not only plant the saplings, but at the same time, we have to ensure their proper maintenance and care”.

Speaking on the occasion, the DNCC administrator expressed the hope that this time-befitting initiative will play an important role in protecting public health, ensuring beauty of the city and bio-diversity along with protecting the environment.

He said the DNCC is continuously implementing the tree plantation programme with an objective of protecting environment by reducing air pollution and developing public health.

The DNCC administrator said that they have a target of planting 3-5 lakh trees during this rainy season.

“We must have to improve the public health situation for building Dhaka as a livable city. We must have to control pollution for eliminating the public health crisis and that’s why the programme has been undertaken”, Ezaz added.

Under the DNCC’s greenery programme, the DNCC administrator said that nearly 77,000 trees had been planted in road divider, park, play ground, graveyard, bank of the cannel and lower income people’s residential areas in 2023-24 fiscal year.

The planted saplings are wood and fruits bearing and herbal and ornamental varieties of trees.

According to DNCC sources, initiatives have been taken to raise mass awareness by integrating different voluntary organizations to this end. Master plan based urban afforestation project will be implemented jointly with the department of forest and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), they added.

Particularly, the DNCC has taken huge greenery plan at 43 kilometers long lake-side and green belt area of Purbachal New Town Project.

The DNCC has launched another programme styled “Tree service and rooftop support center” to integrate the citizen with the afforestation programme. If required, the city dwellers can visit related website or make phone call on 01909110600 numbers.
