Self-contained laboratory of BSTI inaugurated in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, June 28, 2025 (BSS) – Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has been playing a leading role in the country's economic development and the protection of consumer rights, said Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan here today.

He expressed the views while inaugurating the 10-storied building with a state-of-the-art self-contained laboratory of BSTI in the city’s Agrabad commercial area today.

“The inauguration of this 10-storied building with this state-of-the-art laboratory will increase the dynamics of import and export in the port city of Chattogram. The BSTI's laboratory in Chattogram will be developed as a self-contained laboratory,” he said.

Kohinur Akhter, mother of martyred Faisal Ahmed Shanto in the 2024 student uprising inaugurated the newly built BSTI divisional office. 

Considering importance of Chattogram, the adviser said the government has established the BSTI's laboratory here aimed at facilitating export and import and enhancing its product testing and certification capabilities in Chattogram. 

He said this facility would advance the industry, enhance trade activities of this region and further strengthen consumer protection.

City Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, Industries Secretary Md. Obaidur Rahman, BSTI Director General SM Ferdous Alam, Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam and Public Works Department Additional Chief Engineer Md. Shahjalal Chowdhury were present as special guests at the event. 

Kohinur Akhter said Shanto dreamt of a beautiful, exploitation-free and just Bangladesh. 

 “He wanted the fundamental rights of every citizen of this country to be ensured, and the talent and labor of every youth to be properly evaluated. May the goal for which my son was martyred be fulfilled,” she added. 

She said, “I am a martyred mother. My son has left me, but his ideals, his fighting spirit, will remain eternally alive in my heart”. 

Industries Secretary Md. Obaidur Rahman said that BSTI is working in the field of producing quality products within the country and importing those abroad. 

Agreements on product quality with different countries and the achievement of accreditation of laboratories have further strengthened the BSTI. As a result, the acceptance of Bangladeshi products abroad is increasing, he added.

Addressing the event, SM Ferdous Alam said, "The inauguration of BSTI's 10-storied building with state-of-the-art laboratory in Chattogram is a milestone. We want to test and certify all products from here. As a result, businessmen and general buyers of the region will be benefited." 

Businessmen of Chattogram, representatives of the Chattogram Chamber, the Ministry of Industries and officials of BSTI were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
