DHAKA, June 30, 2025 (BSS) – Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian today said the researchers have to work ceaselessly on how to boost jute production from the limited land.
“There is a lot of thing to do with jute…The prospect of jute will never end...The concerned organizations have to attach utmost importance on market research on how other countries are working on raw jute,” he said.
The agriculture secretary was addressing as the chief guest at the “Annual Internal Research Review Workshop-2025” at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) here.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the scientists would have to conduct market research in detailed after coming out from their confined structure.
The research on jute would be more advanced if the research sector of the University and the research institutes work together, he said adding, “Jute is not only a cash crop rather it is a pride of Bangladesh.
Despite huge demand, he said many countries in the world could not produce jute due to their environmental condition, but Bangladesh is a ‘blessed’ on that account.
About the use of modern technology in jute production, he said technology is being changed over the period, so, we have to work together for taking forward the Jute by using the jute related technology.
The agriculture wing of the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) organized the function with BJRI Director General (DG) Dr Nargis Akhter in the chair.
Talking about the prospect of Jute and jute products, the DG said Jute is not only our golden fiber, but it is also a golden episode of our history and tradition.
From the very beginning, she said BJRI has invented a total of 57 jute varieties, 223 agriculture technology and 69 industries and technical technology.
BJRI chief said since the jute is a agricultural product, so the farmers are getting all necessary facilities and credit like the agriculture credit as charcoal exporters are getting 20 percent cash incentive from the government.
In the 2025-26 fiscal year, the targeted land for Jute cultivation is 7.05 lakh hectares and the required seed for the cultivation is around 5,000-6,000 metric tons.
Additional secretary (research) of the Ministry of Agriculture M Abu Zubair Hossen Bablu, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) Executive Chairman Dr Nazmun Nahar Karim and Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University vice chancellor Professor Dr M Abul Latif spoke on the occasion.
BJRI’s breeding division Principal Scientific Officer (PSO)Dr M Golam Mostafa gave the welcome address while BJRI’s Genom research center coordinator and PSO Dr SM Mahbub Ali presented the keynote paper.
Bangladesh produces a total of 15 lakh metric tons of Jute while the production of jute sticks is 30 lakh metric tons and charcoal production is six lakh metric tons.
Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI) Director General Dr Begum Samia Sultana, Cotton Development Board Executive Director M Rezaul Amin, Agriculture Information Services (AIS) Director M Masihur Rahman, National Agriculture Training Academy (NATA) Director General M Saiful Azam Khan, Seed Certification Agency (SCA) Director M Jainal Abedin, Agriculture Ministry’s Joint secretary Dr M Lutfar Rahman, BJRI Director Dr Ferdous Ara Dilruba, scientists and other officials from different agricultural bodies, among others, attended the workshop.
