People's democratic rights to be established through national polls: Fakhrul

SYLHET, July 7, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said people's democratic rights will be established through national elections. 

He said this while talking to reporters after offering ziarat at shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) here.

The BNP secretary general also offered ziarat at the shrine of Hazrat Shahparan (RA) upon reaching Sylhet in the morning to participate in a prayer meeting organized for seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and good health and long life of the party's Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

Stating that BNP were subjected to severe atrocities and tortures during Awami League regime, Fakhrul said, "We have struggled against the fascist (Awami League) for 15 long years”. 

“False cases have been filed against about 6 million of our leaders and activists during Awami League regime. Several thousand BNP men have been killed. As many as 1700 leaders and activists have been victims of enforced disappearances. M. Elias Ali, a very brave leader of Sylhet, is among the victims of enforced disappearances," he said.

When the BNP secretary general along with the perty’s top leaders arrived at the Sylhet airport, party leaders and activists gave them a warm welcome.

BNP Chairperson's Advisor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Organizing Secretary GK Gaus, Assistant Organizing Secretary Miftah Siddiqui, central Working Committee Member Abul Kaher Shamim, District BNP President Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury, Metropolitan BNP Acting President Rezaul Hasan Kayes Lodi, Former Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Badruzzaman Selim and others were present.

After the ziarat, the leaders participated in the prayer mahfil at Sunrise Community Center in Pathantula of the city at 11:30am.

They will also took part in a special commemoration and honoring ceremony organized at the Star Pacific Hotel at the city's Dargah Gate this afternoon to commemorate the martyrs of the July Uprising and pay tribute to their families.
