State-run NLASO provides legal help to 1,28,086 prison inmates in 16 years

DHAKA, July 7, 2025(BSS) - National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has provided free legal supports to 1,28,086 prison inmates in past 16 years until May this year, the state-run legal aid agency said today.

NLASO issued a report, appeared on its website, saying the total number of its service recipients during the period was 12,26,019.

According to NLASO officials their service initially began at district levels but now they was providing legal supports to Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, Workers Legal Aid Cells in Dhaka and Chattogram and offering free helpline (16430) advices alongside operating in 64 districts.

Among the beneficiaries, 29,138 were given from Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, 9,78,992 from 64 District Legal Aid Office, 29,331 from Dhaka and Chattogram Workers Assistant Cells and 1,88,528 from central toll free call centre.

The NLASO, however, started providing of legal supports to the poor and insolvent prisoners of the country from 2000 under a newly enacted law.

The state-run agency has been providing supports to the poor and insolvent people of the country under the Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry.
