RANGAMATI, July 11, 2025 (BSS) - The power generation at Kaptai Hydropower Plant in Rangamati has increased significantly following heavy rainfall that caused water levels in Kaptai Lake to rise.

The plant is currently generating 215 megawatts (MW) of electricity, with all five units now operational.

Talking to BSS, Mahmud Hasan, Executive Engineer and Manager of Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Station, said all five generation units of the plant have become operational.

“All five generation units of the plant became operational at 8:00 PM on Wednesday. Units 1 and 2 are each producing 46 megawatts, totaling 92 MW, while Units 3, 4, and 5 are each generating 40 megawatts, totaling 120 MW,” he added.

He said that the five units of this project were fully operational on Thursday as well.

According to project office sources, around 215 MW of electricity was generated from Thursday.

The power station’s control room reported that due to several days of heavy rainfall in Rangamati and surrounding regions, the water level in Kaptai Lake has been rising steadily. Currently, the lake’s water level is at 96.41 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level), significantly above the rule curve level of 85.28 feet MSL for this time of the year. The lake's maximum capacity is 108 feet MSL.

The Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Station has a maximum generation capacity of 230 megawatts electricity.
