Prominent jurist Syed Ishtiaque's death anniversary today

DHAKA, July 12, 2025 (BSS) - Today marks the 22nd death anniversary of eminent jurist and former caretaker government advisor Barrister Syed Ishtiaque Ahmed.
 
Barrister Syed Ishtiaque, who also served as the Attorney General of Bangladesh, passed away on this day in 2003. He was the father of incumbent Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed. 

A towering figure in the country's legal history, Barrister Ishtiaque was appointed as an advisor to the caretaker government in both 1996 and 2001. He began his legal practice in 1960 and remained active in the profession until his death.
 
From 1961 to 1968, he served as a part-time professor of law at the University of Dhaka, significantly contributing to the development of legal education. In 1972, he was appointed as the Legal Advisor to the University of Dhaka, a position he held with distinction until 1991.

That same year, he was made Additional Attorney General of Bangladesh and was later appointed Attorney General in 1976, serving in the country's highest legal office.

He was also elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association twice during his illustrious career.
