DHAKA, July 12, 2025 (BSS) - The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has awarded a 'Certificate of Appreciation' to Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) ship 'BCGT Promatto' (Tug) and its crew for the first time of the history in Bangladesh for their glorious contribution to extinguishing a devastating fire in an oil tanker anchored at the Chittagong Port.

Lieutenant Commander Harun-ur-Rashid, Media Officer, BCG Headquarters, confirmed media reports of the matter this morning.

"Bangladesh received the honour from the IMO for the first time in its history. It is a major international recognition for Bangladesh. It is not only a matter of pride for the Bangladesh Coast Guard, but also for the country. This recognition in the international arena proves that the Bangladesh Coast Guard, as a modern and efficient force, is capable of working bravely in any disaster," he said.

He stated that a terrible fire broke out in a crude oil tanker named 'MT Banglar Shourabh' under the ownership of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) on the night of October 5, 2024, while it was at anchor outside the Chittagong Port in the coastal area of Bangladesh.

The BCG ship 'BCGT Promatts' (Tug) played an extraordinary role in providing immediate and effective firefighting and preventing marine environmental disasters.

During the incident, a massive explosion and fire broke out on the tanker, posing a major threat to marine life and the overall environment.

BCG immediately launched an emergency rescue operation. 'BCGT Pramatto' (Tug) with its skilled sailors conducted a risky operation to bring the fire under control.

The Coast Guard was able to rescue a total of 48 crew members of the ship and completed the fire extinguishing operation amidst severe stormy weather and strong currents.

The IMO authorities have seriously evaluated the professionalism, efficiency, special role in protecting the environment and respect for international maritime safety norms displayed in this operation, Harun said.

He also said that the Bangladesh Coast Guard is always committed to providing security in the country's maritime borders, rescuing those in danger, preventing marine pollution and protecting the environment.

"In the future, this force will remain committed to protecting the country's sovereignty and fulfilling its responsibilities according to international standards," he added.
