Industrialization-centered policies transforming Bangladesh into investment hub

DHAKA, Aug 05, 2025 (BSS) - Due to Industrialization-centered policies
of the present government during the last one year after assuming office, Bangladesh is actively moving towards a manufacturing and economic hub.

Industry insiders and economists observed that the Industries Ministry's time-bound action plans for one month, three months, six months and nine months is gradually transforming Bangladesh into an investment hub.

Talking to BSS, officials of the Ministry of Industries mentioned that the government has formulated the Iodized Salt Rules, 2024 and the Boiler Rules, 2025 in the last one year.

Moreover, the formulation, updating and amendment of three more laws, two policies and three regulations are ongoing, they added.

Regarding the ship recycling industry, they stated that the official activities of Bangladesh Ship Recycling Board (BSRB) started on 10 April 2025.

During the last fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25), they informed that eight shipyards were awarded Hong Kong Convention (HKC) compliance certificate for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships.

Now, Bangladesh has a total of 14 HKC compliance shipyards.

In addition, during the last one year, two shipyards have won the 'Green Factory Award 2025' from the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

According to the Ministry of Industries sources, local fertilizer factories produced 11.23 lakh metric tons (MTs) of urea, 72.04 thousand MTs of TSP and 49.532 thousand MTs of DAP fertilizer in FY25.

In FY25, 46.187 thousand MTs of sugar was produced during the sugarcane threshing season against the target of 45 thousand metric tons while 22.52 lakh MTs of salt was produced during the period. 

Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) sources informed that 7.505 MTs of honey was produced in the fiscal year 2024-25.

The corporation also arranged 31 fairs, 78 subcontracting connections and nine seminars during the last one year.

A total of 4,127 industrial units received registration certificates from BSCIC in the fiscal year 2024-25 and the corporation provided training to a total of 18,579 people in various trades and in-house training to 1,080 officials.

Regarding the central effluent treatment plant (CETP) at the Savar Tannery Industrial Estate, officials of the Industries Ministry mentioned that full assessment work, including drawing, design and other works under the supervision of the European Union, has started from March 2025.

The ministry also gave approval to six tanneries for setting up their own Effluent Treatment Plant (ETPs).

Out of six, two tanneries have been set up ETPs and one tannery (Bay-Simona) has achieved LWG Gold Certificate in crust to finished leather production.

The officials also informed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
was signed between Atlas Bangladesh Limited and Zhejiang Luan Electric Vehicle Company Limited, China, a global electric scooter and bike manufacturing company, on May 22, 2025 for production and marketing of
energy-efficient, environment-friendly electric bikes and scooters.

The marketing of electric bikes will start by November 2025.

In FY25, Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) formulated 275 product standards. Through the new product standards, so far, BSTI has formulated a total of 4,505 product standards.

In addition, a total of 1,227 products were tested for adulteration during this period.

The Ministry of Industries also informed that BSTI has issued halal certificates to a total of 183 products so far. Out of the 183, a total of 57 products got halal certification in the fiscal year 2024-25.

Besides, Bangladesh Industrial Technical Assistance Center (BITAC) provided training to a total of 7,824 people in 30 trades of various subjects during the fiscal year 2024-25.

The Ministry of Industries registered a total of 25 products as Geographical Indication (GI) during the fiscal year 2024-25. So, now Bangladesh has 56 GI products.

In addition, a total of 30,903 documents related to intellectual property were disposed in FY25. Of these, 246 were patents, 819 were industrial designs and 29,838 were trademarks.

Small and Medium Enterprises Foundation (SMEF) provided training to
4,623 people in the fiscal year 2024-25 and low-interest loans of Taka
309.49 crore to 2,697 entrepreneurs. Out of which 674 were women and
2,023 were men.
