
KHULNA, Nov 26, 2025 (BSS) - Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Mokhter Hossain on Wednesday said that the livestock sector plays a crucial role in the country's economic development, employment generation, and ensuring food and nutrition security.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the National Livestock Week programmes in Khulna city as the chief guest.
The National Livestock Week kicked off at the Joragate C&B Colony field in the city this morning with a colourful rally, a livestock exhibition, a discussion and various other events.
This year's theme is "Indigenous Breeds, Modern Technology: Advancing Livestock Development".
The Divisional Commissioner emphasized the importance of maintaining proper standards in producing milk, eggs, and meat. Alongside government initiatives, collective efforts are essential to build a successful livestock sector, he added.
He also highlighted the need to train farmers in scientific methods of raising animals and stressed that creating a supportive environment for small-scale entrepreneurs would help ensure safe and toxin-free food for consumers.
Khulna Deputy Commissioner ASM Jashim Uddin chaired the discussion while Dr. ABM Zakir Hossain, acting director of the Divisional Livestock Office, Dr. Md. Abdur Rahim, principal of Khulna Institute of Livestock Science and Technology and Dr. SM Ferdous, syndicate member of Khulna Agricultural University, addressed it as special guests.
District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Shariful Islam delivered the welcome speech.
SM Sohrab Hossain, general secretary of the Poultry-Fish Feed Owners Association, and Md. Tofazzel Hossain Tushar also addressed the gathering.
The programme was jointly organised by the District Administration and the District Livestock Office.
Earlier, the chief guest visited the stalls at the livestock exhibition.
A total of 40 stalls showcased cows, goats, sheep, ducks, chickens, cats, various other livestock, vaccines, medicines, animal feed, technological innovations, livestock products, production and preservation methods, and
marketing techniques.
A colourful rally marking the week started from the Joragate C&B Colony field, paraded through different streets, and ended at the same venue with the participation of people from different walks of life.
As part of National Livestock Week, a free vaccination and deworming campaign for ducks and chickens will be held tomorrow from 10 am to 3 pm at the livestock market field in Joragate.
