July Uprising anniversary observed in Ottawa

OTTAWA, Aug 6, 2025 (BSS) - The Bangladesh High Commission in Canada, in association with the University of Toronto, hosted a panel discussion titled "Monsoon Rising: Celebrating Youth Resilience - One Year After", marking the anniversary of the July Uprising.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to Canada, Nahida Sobhan, inaugurated the event by paying profound tribute to the July martyrs and to all those who stood their ground in the face of violent repression, said a press release received here today.

Messages from President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, issued to mark the day, were read out to the audience.

A one-minute silence was observed in memory of the July martyrs. Later, a video documentary on the July Uprising was screened.

The panel discussion brought together academics, journalists, activists, and youth leaders from both Bangladesh and the diaspora.

The panel featured Mustahid Husain, author and anthropologist at the University of Toronto; Prapti Taposhi, student leader and feminist activist from Jahangirnagar University; Rafid Hossain, producer at BBC Eye Investigations; Srijoni Rahman, PhD researcher at York University; and Tanha Tanjila, refugee rights advocate and youth leader at Dalhousie University.
