DINAJPUR, Aug 10, 2025 (BSS) – Authorities have launched a new phase of extraction at Barapukuria Coal Mine in this north-western region expecting to dig out 3.94 lakh tones of hydrocarbon from the quarry in the next one year.

“Extraction began in the quarry under a new phase after one and half months,” state--run Barapukuria Coal Mining Company’s (BCMCL) managing director M Abu Taleb Farazi told reporters at the site.

He said the extraction works were re-launched in full swing from midday Sunday following a trial run on Saturday.

According to the BCMCL officials the new extraction phase was launched installing and readjusting machineries and equipment as the stockpile of previously extracted coals were exhausted.

The mine officials said 5.10 lakh tones of coal were extracted from the old phase from January to June this year.

BCMCL general manager for operations Engineer Khan M Zafar Sadiq said that they planned to extract 1,500 to 2,000 tonnes of coal per day initially while the volume would go up to 3,500 tonnes.

The mine is the source of fuel of adjacent Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant for electricity production.
