ICT to frame charges on Thursday over firing student hanging from cornice

DHAKA, Sept 16, 2025(BSS) - The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) -1 today fixed Thursday for framing charges against the accused for killing two people and firing a student who was hanging from a cornice of a building at Rampura area during last year's July-August mass upsurge.

The three-member ICT-1, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, fixed the date for framing the charges against five accused after hearing both the sides.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam moved before the tribunal for framing charges against the accused while state appointed lawyer advocate Md Amir Hossain appeared for the absconding accused. Advocate Sarwar Jahan Nippon moved for arrested accused of the case former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police Chanchal Chandra Sarkar seeking his acquittal from the charge.

The other accused of the case are - former commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Habibur Rahman, former additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Khilgaon zone Md Rashedul Islam, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Rampura Thana Md Moshiur Rahman and former sub-inspector of the same police station Tariqul Islam Bhuiyan.

According to the case documents, Amir Hossain, a student of Rampura area, fell into a clash between the two groups of people in the afternoon of July 19 while he was returning home after Jumma prayer. In the face of indiscriminate firing, Amir took shelter in an under construction building of the area and a group of police chased the pickets up to the third floor of the building. The police personnel targeted their guns at Amir Hossain and instructed him to jump down from the floor. At one stage, Amir Hossain jumped from the third floor but was hanging with a rod as a police personnel opened fire at him. Later, another police official fired six rounds of bullet at his legs from a point blank range and left the area. At that time, Amir jumped on the second floor of the building from where he was rescued by a local student and two doctors. He was immediately taken to a nearby clinic from where he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Amir Hossain luckily survived but two other people were also shot dead in the area at that time.
