Govt. works to achieve self-reliant in health sector: LGRD Adviser

DHAKA, Sept 16, 2025 (BSS) - Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Sojib Bhuiyan today said the government has been working relentlessly to achieve self-reliant in the country’s health sector.

“Our health system was dependent on one country. After coming out from there, we are working to achieve self-reliant in the country’s health sector,” he said while addressing a press conference at his ministry here.

The adviser said that China gave a proposal to set up some international standard hospitals in the country. The government is considering the proposals…If these hospitals are set up, our health problems will be solved to a large scale.”

Regarding Health Affairs Adviser Nurjahan Begum's treatment in Singapore, Asif said that she has been suffering from major health complication for long.Therefore, she was taking treatment in Singapore earlier. Her matter should be considered on humanitarian ground.

About doctors shortage in public hospitals, he said the process of recruiting more physicians through special BCS is underway and the recruitment will be completed very soon, he added.

The adviser inaugurated 11 buildings dedicated to medical services of the Urban Primary Healthcare Services Delivery Project under the local government ministry.

He said that despite the existence of various hospitals, the Urban Healthcare Project ensures free quality medical treatment to poor women, children and pregnant women of the country.

Local Government Secretary Rezaul Maksud Zahedi, Chief Engineer of LGED Anwar Hossain and senior officials concerned were present at the programme.

Under the project three urban maternity centres and eight urban health centres were constructed; which included one city maternity centre and one city health centre in Mymensingh City Corporation, one city health centre in Gazipur City Corporation, one city maternity centre and one city health centre in Kurigram Municipality, one city maternity centre and one city health centre in Shariatpur Municipality, one city health centre in Gaibandha Municipality, one city health centre in Faridpur Municipality, one city health centre in Laksam Municipality and one city health centre in Tarab Municipality.
