Chief Adviser mourns death of firefighter Shamim

NEW YORK, Sept 23, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today expressed profound shock at the death of firefighter Shamim Ahmed, who succumbed to injuries in a devastating fire at a chemical warehouse at Tongi in Gazipur district in Bangladesh on Monday.

In a condolence message, the Chief Adviser, who is now here in the USA to attend the 80th United Nations General Assembly, prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family members.

Professor Yunus prayed for a speedy recovery for the four firefighters and a local youth who also sustained burn injuries and are currently undergoing treatment in Dhaka.

He said that firefighters, by risking their own lives to save others, have set an example that will remain a source of inspiration for others. 

"The nation will gratefully remember their contribution," the Chief Adviser added.

Shamim, a firefighter of Tongi Fire Station, sustained severe burn injuries while extinguishing the blaze at a chemical factory at Tongi's Sahara Market in Bangladesh on Monday.

He sustained 100 percent burns and was undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 42.

Other injured who are currently undergoing treatment include Senior Station Officer Shahin Alam, Warehouse Inspector Khandakar Jannatul Naeem (35), Firefighter Nurul Huda (40), Firefighter Joy Hasan (24), and local shopkeeper Al-Amin Babu (22).
