Dhaka, Sept 24, 2025 (BSS) - World Maritime Day 2025 will be observed tomorrow, as elsewhere in the world, with the theme ‘Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity’.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has issued a message in this regard.

In his message, the Chief Adviser said, “World Maritime Day is observed annually to highlight the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the protection of the marine environment. It is a day that recognises the vital role of the maritime industry in global trade and the world economy.”

Each year, he said, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) selects a specific theme to address key challenges and issues facing the maritime sector. This year's theme, ‘Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity’, is particularly meaningful, he added.

He said oceans are a vital source of food for billions of people and produce half of the oxygen we breathe. They are home to countless marine species and support millions of jobs and livelihoods across the globe, providing immense economic opportunities, he added.

He said international shipping, the most cost-effective mode of global transportation, plays a fundamental role in facilitating international trade. By enabling the efficient movement of goods, it drives economic growth and prosperity worldwide, the CA added.

Professor Muhammad Yunus said, “On the occasion of World Maritime Day 2025, I urge all maritime stakeholders to act responsibly to preserve our oceans and marine ecosystems. Let us commit to adopting, implementing, and enforcing the necessary regulations and guidelines to honour our obligations and safeguard the sanctity of our underwater world.”
