DHAKA, Sept 27, 2025 (BSS) - One more fireman who sustained severe burn injuries in the explosion of a chemical warehouse in Tongi on September 22, died at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) this morning.
Warehouse Inspector (officer) of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Khondoker Jannatul Nayem (38) succumbed to his burn injuries at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) around 10 am today.
NIBPS Resident Surgeon Dr Shawon Bin Rahman confirmed the death, saying that Nayem was undergoing treatment at the institute with 42 percent burn injuries.
The namaj--e-janaja of Nayem will be held at FSCD Headquarters in the capital around 2:30pm today, fire service sources said.
With Nayem, all the three firemen who sustained critical burn injuries in the Tongi chemical go-down explosion, have so far died.
Another firefighter Joy Hasan (24) now undergoing treatment at the burn institute with 5 percent burn injuries.
Earlier firefighters Shamim (42) and Nurul Huda (40) died at the burn institute with 100 percent burn injuries on September 23 and 24 respectively.
The four firemen suffered the burn injuries in the explosion occurred at a tin-shed chemical godown while they were dousing a flame that erupted in the warehouse at Sahara Market in Tongi, Gazipur, at around 3:29 pm September 22, fire brigade sources said.
Seven firefighting engines brought the fire under control around 7:00 pm after about two hours of frantic efforts.
With the death of Shamim, Nurul and Nayem, the number of firefighters who sacrificed their lives while performing their duties reached 51 since inception of FSCD, fire service sources said.
