DHAKA, Oct 10, 2025 (BSS) – Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today said the postal department plays a vital role in communication and it must adapt responsibly and work with dedication in keeping pace with the ongoing digital transformation.
She made the remarks while speaking at the closing session of a discussion organized on the occasion of World Post Day at the Postal Directorate’s conference room in Agargaon in the capital today.
“The GPO (General Post Office) is a part of Dhaka’s heritage, and the government is working to preserve it,” the adviser said, calling upon all to work collectively to build a modern and discrimination-free Bangladesh.
Speaking as special guest, Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant on the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said efforts are underway to eliminate long-standing inequalities faced by postal employees.
He said that concerns among postal officials and employees regarding the expansion of the Secretariat at the current GPO premises have been resolved. “A Postal Museum will be established at the GPO site to preserve collective memories,” he added.
The special assistant further said the existing address management system is not compatible with the digital economy, and initiatives are being taken to digitize it by incorporating experiences from private courier services.
“To achieve this, area codes, street codes, and house codes will be integrated and linked with geo-fencing. Since address management involves personal data, necessary measures are being taken to ensure data security through updating the Postal and Courier Act,” he said.
Taiyeb said around 50–60 percent of mail and parcel deliveries are currently trackable under the mail and parcel tracking system. Efforts are underway to enhance the software and make the tracking system nearly 100 percent efficient, he added.
He added that steps have been taken to integrate the postal department with e-commerce services to bridge the service gap between rural and urban areas.
At the event, winners of children’s art and quiz competitions and the best postal employee were awarded.
Chaired by Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division Abdun Naser Khan, it was also attended by Secretary of the ICT Division Shish Hayder Chowdhury, Director General of Postal Department S M Shahabuddin, and heads of various offices and agencies under the ministry.
