DHAKA, Oct 11, 2025 (BSS) - Primary and Mass Education Adviser Professor Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Podder today underscored the importance of raising awareness among general public and policymakers to overcome ignorance, the main obstacle to accessing mental health services.
"We have to create awareness among the people to encourage them to get mental health services," he said.
He was addressing a seminar as the chief guest marking the Global Mental Health organized by the Department of Psychiatry of Bangladesh Medical University at its Dr Milon Hall here.
The Adviser said the common people, who are not intended to get the treatment, will later show their willingness in getting the services as they have understood properly about its necessity.
There is a negative mindset about mental health and services even among the educated people, he said.
"Members of the families of many physicians have also been suffering from mental health problems. But, they are not taking required treatment, which is very sad. So, awareness should be created among the policy makers alongside the people," he added.
The Adviser said they are going to introduce mental health services at schools.
Department of Psychiatry of Bangladesh Medical University teacher Prof DMMA Salauddin presided over the seminar.
Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrists Secretary General Prof Dr Nizam Uddin and Director of National Institute of Mental Health Prod Dr Mahbubur Rahman, spoke on the occasion, as the special guests.
