DHAKA, Oct 11, 2025 (BSS) - The International Day of the Girl Child 2025 is being observed globally today to raise awareness about girls' rights and the challenges they face.
The day highlights issues such as gender inequality, child marriage, and lack of access to education, while promoting the rights of girls to health, safety, and education.
This year's theme is "The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis."
First celebrated in 2012, the day was established following a global campaign titled "Because I Am a Girl" led by the non-governmental organization Plan International, with strong advocacy from its Canadian branch and support from the Canadian government.
The United Nations officially recognized the day on December 19, 2011. The inaugural theme was "Ending Child Marriage."
Each year, the observance focuses on a specific issue affecting girls worldwide.
The International Day of the Girl Child is marked every year on October 11 in all UN member states and is also referred to as Girls' Day.
It seeks to eliminate gender inequality and ensure girls' rights to education, healthcare, nutrition, legal protection, and safety from violence and forced marriage.
