Modern life can't operate without mathematics: KU VC

KHULNA, Oct 18, 2025 (BSS) - Highlighting the crucial role of mathematics in modern civilization, the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Khulna University (KU), Prof Dr Md Rezaul Karim, said, "There is no sector of modern life that operates without mathematics."

"Mathematics is the driving force now behind artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and advanced technology," he made the remarks as chief guest while inaugurating the two-day "Grand Reunion" programme on Friday at the university's multipurpose room of Academic Building No. 3.

He praised the university's mathematics alumni for their contributions in Bangladesh and abroad, which have enhanced the university's reputation.

The Vice-Chancellor also paid tribute to the discipline's meritorious alumnus and July Movement martyr, Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdha.

The VC formally inaugurated the event by releasing balloons and festoons.

Organized by the Khulna University Mathematics Alumni Association, the association's President Munshi Shahid Anis presided over the event, while General Secretary Md Abdullah Al Mamun delivered the welcome speech.

Following the inauguration, a colorful procession paraded through the campus.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Harunur Rashid, Dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology Professor Dr Md Ashraful Alam, Head of Mathematics Discipline Professor Dr Md Azmal Huda, Director of Student Affairs Professor Dr Md Nazmus Sadat, and senior faculty member Professor Dr Md Rafiqul Islam also addressed the ceremony as special guests.

KU Alumni Association General Secretary Md Akhtar Hossain, Mathematics Alumni representative Md Abu Shamim, and KU Math Club President Tasbiha Tabassum Paroma, among others, also spoke.
