DHAKA, Oct 20, 2025 (BSS)- A seminar featuring practice of traditional
Chinese medicine and medication methods was held today at the Dhaka
University (DU).

The seminar titled "The Introduction of Traditional Chinese Medicine and
Medical Practices" was jointly organised by the DU Pharmaceutical Technology
Department and the Center for China Studies (CCS).

Supported by Beacon Pharmaceuticals Limited, the event took place at the
Pharmacy faculty Lecture Theatre.

DU pro-VC Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha attended the seminar as the chief
guest with Dean of Pharmacy Faculty Prof Md. Selim Reza in the chair.

"There is a growing need to explore cost-effective treatment options. A
strategic integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare can help
reduce treatment costs," Prof. Bidisha said.

She also stressed the importance of strengthening ongoing academic and
research collaborations between the DU and various other Chinese
institutions.

Three keynote speakers addressed the seminar on the topic. They are Prof Dr.
Md. Abdur Rashid of Pharmaceutical Chemistry Department, Dean of Shanghai
University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM) Prof Dr. Hailei Zhao and
its Acupuncture Specialist Prof Dr. Yi Li.

Prof Abdur Rashid emphasized the potential of utilizing Bangladesh's rich
herbal and natural resources for pharmaceutical research.

"There is no conflict between traditional and modern medicine. Rather,
integrating traditional knowledge with modern pharmaceutical technology--
similar to the China model-- can further enrich our pharmaceutical industry,"
he said, stressing the need for research, education, and international
collaboration in this sector.

Prof. Dr. Haile Zhao said, "Traditional Chinese Medicine is not just a method
of treatment rather it is a philosophy that promotes harmony between the
body, mind, and nature. Integrating this heritage into modern public health
systems is essential for human well-being."

Dr. Yi Li (M.D.), as a final speaker, discussed the scientific aspects of
acupuncture.

"Acupuncture is a scientific method to balance the flow of energy-known as
'Qi'within the body. This treatment method is working in harmony with modern
medical science and has added a new dimension to alternative medicine
globally," he added.

At the end of the speeches, Prof Dr. Md. Selim Reza, Dean of the Faculty of
Pharmacy, presented honorary crests to the distinguished guests.

The second session of the seminar featured a live acupuncture demonstration
conducted by Dr. Yi Li.
