DHAKA, Dec 10, 2025 (BSS) - The government will launch the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) on December 16 as part of its efforts to curb the entry of smuggled, cloned, refurbished and used foreign mobile phones, prevent mobile phone theft and enhance public safety by tackling digital crimes linked to online gambling, mobile banking and mobile financial services.
Initially, all unregistered mobile phones were required to be registered by December 16. However, after three days of discussions with mobile industry stakeholders and in response to their concerns, the government has extended the deadline. Users will now have until March 15, 2026, to register any unregistered mobile phones.
At present, there are no restrictions on importing mobile phones. The Posts and Telecommunications Division will notify the Ministry of Commerce and other relevant authorities about which models and how old devices may be imported. Importers will be required to inform the appropriate government agencies before bringing in any shipments. All parties were instructed to submit written updates to the Department of Posts and Telecommunications tomorrow.
Discussions are also in progress with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Ministry of Commerce regarding potential revisions to mobile phone import duties. The Posts and Telecommunications Division is coordinating the process, while importers and manufacturers have agreed to jointly submit written recommendations to the government.
Authorities have urged all parties to avoid any activities that may disrupt the country's law and order situation following the decision.
