ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, Kushtia, Dec 14, 2025 (BSS) - Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia today observed Martyred Intellectuals Day, paying homage to the intellectuals who were killed by the Pakistan occupation forces and their collaborators during the 1971 Liberation War.

The day began with Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah hoisting the national flag at half-mast, while Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr M Yeaqub Ali raised a black flag in front of the university's administrative building.

Later, teachers, officials, students, and staff participated in a rally led by the Vice-Chancellor from the administrative building around 10:00 am. Treasurer Prof Dr Jahangir Alam and acting Registrar Prof Dr Manjurul Haque also joined the procession.

After parading through the main roads of the campus, the rally concluded at the memorial monument, where IU authorities, Zia Parishad, UTAB, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Union IU unit, residential halls, departments, Islamic University Journalists' Association, Islamic University Press Club, and various cultural organizations placed floral wreaths in tribute to the martyred intellectuals.

Earlier in the morning, provosts of all residential halls hoisted the national flag at half-mast and raised black flags atop their respective halls.

Speaking on the occasion, IU VC said, "December 14 is one of the most significant days in the history of Bangladesh. Just before independence, the Pakistan occupation forces and their collaborators killed the intellectuals of Dhaka University and other institutions, who served as the nation's think tank for freedom.

"Today, we remember their sacrifices, made with the dream of an independent, self-reliant, and justice-based Bangladesh. Their dedication laid the foundation for the freedom we enjoy today," he said.

"To truly honor the spirit of the martyred intellectuals, we must link it with the spirit of the July revolutionaries. Holding onto this shared consciousness, we remember the martyrs and pray that Allah accepts their contributions to the nation's welfare," the VC added.
