DHAKA, Jan 10, 2026 (BSS)- Three-day long ninth non-fiction book fair began
today at the Dhaka University (DU) premises.
The fair was inaugurated this afternoon at the Faculty of Business Studies
(FBS) of DU.
Bangla Academy Chairman Professor Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq, DU Pro-Vice
Chancellor (VC) Prof Sayema Haque Bidisha, DU FBS Dean Dr. Mahmood Osman
Imam, DUCSU VP Abu Shadik Kayem were present during the inauguration
ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Prof Abul Quasem said the non-fiction book fair does
not feature story-based literature, but rather thoughtful and research-based
books, where people's thoughts are directly expressed.
"The deeper the practice of thought, the wider the progress of a nation. Non-
fiction books are just as important as poetry or novels. We congratulate this
initiative of Banik Barta and hope that it will further advance our
knowledge," he added.
DU Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Saima Haque Bidisha said, "Although learning
opportunities have increased in the internet era, personal contact has
decreased. There is no alternative to reading books and talking to develop
talent and thinking. Banik Barta's non-fiction book fair will add more
enthusiasm to students' reading."
DUCSU VP Abu Shadik said the non-fiction Book Fair by Banik Barta is
exceptional and innovative in terms of organization. "Such book fairs make
students interested in reading books," he added.
After brief addressing, the guests inaugurated the fair by releasing
balloons.
The fair is mainly organised by the joint venture of Daily Banik Barta and
Dhaka University with cooperation of Southeast Bank PLC.
A total of 39 publications allocated stalls for this year's book fair at the
DU FBS premises.
To propagate the book reading and buying habit, organisers offer lottery
tickets for buyers as they buy books. The raffle draw will be held at around
5 pm on Monday (January 12).
Besides, Non-Fiction Book Award-2025 will be conferred at the concluding
ceremony of the fair.
