KHULNA, Jan 14, 2026 (BSS) - General students of Khulna University (KU) brought out a procession at midnight on last night demanding the abolition of the student representative system and protesting increase of registration fees.
The protesting students placed three key demands, including reduction of registration fees, extension of the course registration deadline, and withdrawal of the student representative system.
The procession began around 11pm from Hadi Chattar and marched through BirSreshthaRuhul Amin Hall, Khan BahadurAhsanullah Hall and Khan Jahan Ali Hall, before circling the Vice-Chancellor’s residence and returning to HadiChattar.
The students staged a sit-in there for about an hour and held a brief protest rally to press home their demands.
Speaking at the rally, Alif Mahmud, a fourth-year student of the Pharmacy Discipline, said the registration fee had been increased without any discussion with students.
“This amount is too high for students. We do not accept any increase in registration fees. This unreasonable fee must be reduced,” he said.
Another fourth-year student, RezwanulHaque of the English Discipline, said Khulna University has been a non-political campus since its inception.
“Previously, decisions on important issues were taken after consulting fourth-year students. Introducing student representatives will open the door to campus politics and serve certain agendas. As general students, we will not accept this so-called representative system,” he added.
At the rally, students demanded that the registration fee be reduced within one working day, the registration period be extended, and the student representative system at the discipline level be abolished.
The university administration said discussions would be held with student representatives on the matter, which the protesting students opposed.
In response to the students’ demands, Assistant Director of Student Affairs Ehsan Majid Mostafa appeared in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s residence and said, “We have listened to the students’ statements. Their demands will be conveyed to the administration, and the administration will take the final decision.”
Regarding the alleged increase in course registration fees, Professor Dr Md RezaulKarim said misinformation was being spread on social media, adding that no course registration fee had been increased.
