DHAKA, Jan 17, 2026(BSS) - Shipping, Labour and Employment Adviser Brig Gen (Rtd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain today said the restart of Pangaon Inland Container Terminal (ICT) opened is a new horizon in the country's port management and inland water transport sector.
Upgrading of the Pangaon ICT to international standards would increase inland container transportation and further strengthen multimodal transport connectivity, he said while inaugurating the resumption of the Pangaon ICT, following a Switzerland based model, at Keraniganj of the west of the capital as chief guest.
He said that the government's primary objective is to transform a critically important infrastructure that had been incurring losses for a long time into a profitable and efficient facility through skilled and professional management.
Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Dr. Nurunnahar Chowdhury, who was a special guest at the inaugural function, said that under the 22-year concession agreement, cargo handling activities at the Pangaon ICT would become more dynamic, which would have a positive impact on the national economy.
Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority Rear Admiral M. Moniruzzaman was present also as a special guest while the welcome address was delivered by ATM Anisul Mollah, Managing Director of MGL Bangladesh Private Limited, said an official release.
It was informed at the ceremony that the Pangaon ICT, constructed at a cost of approximately Taka 155 crore, had been incurring losses for the past decade. As a result, the government decided to bring its operations under private management.
In continuation of this decision, a 22-year concession agreement was signed last November under which MGL Bangladesh Private Limited, in partnership with the Chittagong Port Authority, has been entrusted with the responsibility for the operation, maintenance and modernization of the Pangaon ICT.
