DHAKA, Mar 1, 2026 (BSS) - Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain today urged medical professionals to become internationally standard specialist doctors by combining humanity with professional excellence.
“There is no end to medical science. Beyond merely earning degrees, one must develop compassion for patients, uphold ethics, and pursue modern knowledge to become a truly humane specialist,” he said.
The minister was addressing as the chief guest at the oath-taking ceremony “Residency Induction Programme-2026” of newly admitted Phase-A resident doctors for the March 2026 academic session at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed International Convention Center of Bangladesh Medical University in the capital.
A total of 1,306 resident doctors took the oath at the ‘Residency Induction Program 2026’.
Hossain said producing skilled and research-oriented specialist doctors is needed to prevent people from seeking advanced medical treatment abroad.
Addressing the resident doctors, he said they must utilize every moment of their academic life to enrich themselves not only with clinical skills but also with humane behavior. Good conduct and empathy toward patients are integral parts of medical service, he said.
He assured necessary support for establishing a molecular laboratory, a modern library, and residential hostels for residents at the university.
According to him, ensuring world-class medical education is not possible without strengthening research infrastructure, said Hossain.
Speaking as special guest, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr MA Muhit said the current government is committed to ensuring quality and accessible healthcare for all.
He emphasized that newly admitted resident doctors must play a significant role in achieving this goal.
He also stressed the importance of focusing on research alongside higher medical education and acquiring knowledge about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics in medical science.
BMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Shahinul Alam administered the oath to the new resident doctors.
Among those who took the oath were 543 residents from the Faculty of Surgery, 400 from the Faculty of Medicine, 124 from the Faculty of Pediatrics, 156 from the Faculty of Basic and Paraclinical Sciences, and 83 from the Faculty of Dentistry.
