Ariful Haque stresses ILO cooperation for sustainable employment in Bangladesh

DHAKA, Mar 15, 2026 (BSS) – Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury today underscored the importance of constructive guidance and collaboration from the International Labour Organization (ILO) to promote safe workplaces, uphold occupational health and safety, implement international labour standards, and foster sustainable employment in Bangladesh.

The minister made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with ILO Country Director for Bangladesh, Max Tunon, at the conference room of the Ministry of Labour and Employment at Bangladesh Secretariat.

During the meeting, the minister noted that a draft of the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act, 2026, prepared in line with the Bangladesh Labour Ordinance, 2025, has been submitted for cabinet approval. Once approved, it will be presented before the national parliament shortly.

Speaking at the meeting, ILO Country Director Max Tunon said the organization has reviewed the government’s 180-day action plan and is keen to work jointly with the government on its implementation. He also emphasized the importance of consultations with relevant stakeholders in executing the provisions of the law, particularly where major changes have been introduced.

Labour and Employment Secretary Md. Abdur Rahman Tarafdar, senior officials from the Ministry, and representatives from the ILO Bangladesh office attended the meeting.
