Dhaka urges Russia to back Bangladesh’s UNGA presidency bid

DHAKA, March 15, 2026 (BSS): State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today sought Russia’s support for Bangladesh’s candidature for the Presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the 2026–2027 term.

The appeal was made when Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bangladesh Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin paid a courtesy call on the state minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the capital, said a foreign ministry’s press release here. 

During the meeting, the Russian envoy congratulated Shama Obaed Islam on assuming office as the State Minister for Foreign Affairs and expressed confidence that the longstanding relations between Bangladesh and Russia would continue to grow stronger.

The state minister highlighted the historic and friendly ties between the two countries, noting that bilateral cooperation has steadily expanded across a wide range of sectors including energy, trade and investment, science and technology, education, skilled migration and people-to-people exchanges.


She underscored the further strengthening engagement with Russia and deepening cooperation in mutually beneficial areas.

The Russian ambassador reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and appreciated Bangladesh’s continued constructive engagement with Russia.

Both sides expressed satisfaction over the steady progress of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the longstanding and mutually beneficial partnership between the two friendly countries.
