Broadband main driving force on path to Smart Bangladesh: Fakir Mahbub

DHAKA, April 15, 2026 (BSS) - Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology Fakir Mahbub Anam today said broadband is no longer a luxury, but an essential necessity for education, health, e-governance and trade and commerce.

"Broadband is the main driving force on the path to Smart Bangladesh," he said while speaking as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of Broadband Expo 2026, held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

The Minister said the government is working to deliver high-speed internet to remote areas, make broadband affordable and ensure a business-friendly environment.

He added employment will be generated by launching AI and freelancing training in every upazila.

He called for strengthening coordination between the government and private sectors to work together for the country's digital development.

In his address as a special guest, the Secretary of the ICT Division Kazi Anwar Hossain said robust and reliable connectivity is now the most important priority for building a Smart Bangladesh.

The Secretary further stated, "The government's current three main goals are 'One Citizen, One ID, One Wallet,' and the application of artificial intelligence in health, education and the public sector."

Various internet service providers, technology companies and related stakeholders from across the country participated in Broadband Expo 2026 and presented exhibitions of modern technology and services.

Advocate Zainul Abedin, Chairman of the Special Committee of the National Parliament; Abdus Salam, Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation; and Major General Md. Emdad Ul Bari, Chairman of BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) took part in the event as the special guests.
