River Police intensify security measures on waterways ahead of Eid-ul-Azha

DHAKA, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP) of River Police Md Rezaul Karim today said the River Police has been working sincerely to ensure security in transportation of passengers and sacrificial animals on waterways ahead of the holy Eid-ul-Azha.

"We have already instructed senior officers of the concerned regions to remain active on waterways and maintain strict vigilance to maintain strict security on waterways alongside ensuring defective vessels cannot operate on rivers," he said. 

He made the remarks while presiding over a views-exchange meeting on "Security and Water Traffic Management for Transportation of Passengers, Goods and Sacrificial Animals on Waterways ahead of Eid-ul-Azha-2026" held at the conference room of River Police Headquarters in Dhaka.

The measures include preventing overloading of passengers and goods on launches and vessels, operating water transport after checking weather forecasts, strengthening surveillance to prevent extortion, theft and harassment, intensifying patrols on waterways and ensuring that passengers are not picked up or dropped off from small boats at unauthorised points outside terminals, he said.

Addressing the meeting, the additional IGP urged all concerned to refrain from carrying excess passengers and to ensure that launches depart on schedule to make Eid journeys smooth and uninterrupted.

He has sought cooperation from all concerned to keep waterways safe and extending advance Eid greetings.

At the beginning of the meeting, discussions were held with representatives of different government and private organisations and police superintendents of various River Police regions, who joined virtually.

The meeting discussed security at river terminals, safe travel of homebound passengers, transportation of goods and sacrificial animals, maintaining law and order, movement of launches, speedboats and bulkheads, prevention of extortion, security at cattle markets on riverbanks and transportation of rawhides.

Speakers at the meeting highlighted various issues related to ensuring safe waterways during Eid-ul-Azha.

The River Police has been conducting various activities to implement government decisions aimed at making the journeys of homebound people and transportation of sacrificial animals safe and hassle-free.

Representatives from various government and private organisations related to waterways, additional DIGs, officials from Dhaka Range Office, River Police Headquarters, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Fire Service and Civil Defence and police superintendents from all River Police regions attended the meeting both physically and virtually.
