DHAKA, July 9, 2026 (BSS) - The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs today held its second meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, where members discussed the proposed Bogura University Bill-2026 in detail.

At the outset of the meeting, the committee confirmed the proceedings of its first meeting and an adjourned session.

The meeting reviewed various provisions of the proposed legislation, including a proposal to remove the earlier provision specifying Jamalpur as the location of the university and instead allow the institution to be established at any suitable place in Bogura district.

The bill also proposes to broaden the academic scope of the university. Instead of limiting education and research to science and technology, the proposed law would enable the university to offer education and conduct research in science, engineering, technology, social sciences, law, business administration, agriculture and medical sciences.

As the proposed legislation seeks to amend most of the provisions of the existing law, the meeting noted that the government has taken the initiative to repeal and reenact the legislation instead of introducing piecemeal amendments, said a parliament secretariat press release here.

The committee recommended conducting a thorough scrutiny and review of the bill before submitting its report to parliament.

With Committee Chairman Barrister Andaleeve Rahman in the chair,  Committee members, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md. Asaduzzaman, Muhammad Nowshad Zamir, Sakila Farzana, Md Monjurul Islam, Md Hasan Rajib Pradhan, Mohammad Najibur Rahman and Akhter Hossen, attended the meeting.

Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Hoque Milon also attended the meeting as a special invitee.

Secretaries of the Law and Justice Division, the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, the Secondary and Higher Education Division, along with senior officials of the relevant ministries and the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, were present at the meeting.
