DHAKA, July 19, 2026 (BSS) – Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam today inaugurated the “One Child, One Tree” programme in Manikganj, calling for collective efforts to build a greener and better liveable Bangladesh for future generations.
The programme was inaugurated at Nabagram Government Primary School in Manikganj Sadar with the objective of encouraging environmental awareness among children and promoting tree plantation as a shared responsibility towards protecting nature.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony as the chief guest, Afroza said the initiative was not merely about planting trees but about instilling environmental responsibility among the younger generation.
“We have not gathered here merely to inaugurate a programme. We have gathered to pledge our commitment to building a greener Bangladesh for future generations—to place a tree in the hands of a child and to sow the seeds of a beautiful tomorrow through a tree,” she said.
The minister said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is working to build a modern, green and liveable Bangladesh.
“We believe that development is not limited to the construction of bridges, roads or buildings. Development becomes meaningful only when nature is protected, the environment remains safe and people become conscious of their responsibilities,” she said.
“Therefore, planting a tree is not merely the act of planting a sapling. It is a pledge, a responsibility and a gift to future generations,” she added.
Afroza expressed gratitude to the people of Manikganj for placing their trust in her and sought their prayers and continued support in realising the dreams and aspirations of the district's people.
Following her address, the minister formally inaugurated the programme by planting a tree along with officials and other participants.
The Manikganj Sadar upazila administration organised the programme, attended by officials of the district and upazila administrations as well as local dignitaries.
