DHAKA, July 16, 2026 (BSS) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Director General Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui today inaugurated the force's "Tree Plantation Programme-2026" at Pilkhana, highlighting the vital role of afforestation in combating climate change and environmental degradation.

The BGB chief formally launched the weeklong programme by planting a coconut sapling on the western side of the Bir Uttam Anwar Hossain Parade Ground at the BGB Headquarters in Pilkhana this afternoon, said a BGB press release.

Referring to the theme of this year's national tree plantation campaign, "Let's green the country through tree plantation, Bangladesh first", he said tree plantation is not merely a programme but a noble responsibility and a commitment to building a greener world for future generations.
He stressed that there is no alternative to afforestation in addressing the adverse impacts of climate change and protecting the environment.

The BGB chief directed all BGB establishments across the country to plant fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal trees in a planned manner, the release said.
Calling upon every BGB member to plant at least one tree annually, he said, “The responsibility does not end with planting a sapling; proper care and preservation are equally important to ensure its growth and survival.”

He said BGB has set a target of planting 73,000 saplings across the country this year, including at its headquarters.
